A Master of Gentleness, Silence, and True Love
The Tosher Rebbe, Rabbi Meshulam Feish Lowy zatsal, was born in 1921 in Nyírtass, Hungary, into a family deeply rooted in Hasidic tradition and fear of Heaven.
Scarred by the horrors of the Second World War, he lost much of his family in the Shoah. Yet from this darkness emerged a radiant light — that of a man whose faith, compassion, and serenity transformed pain into love for others.
He belonged to those rare souls who do not speak to convince, but whose silence itself teaches.
From Hungary to the Reconstruction of Life
After the war, he took up the leadership of the Tosh Hasidic dynasty, founded by his ancestor Rabbi Elimelech of Tosh. Facing the threat of the Communist regime, he left Hungary in 1951 and settled in Montreal, Canada.
There, he patiently rebuilt a community founded on warmth, simplicity, and devotion to Hashem.
In 1963, he established Kiryas Tosh in Boisbriand, near Montreal — a small town dedicated to Hasidic life, far from the noise of the world. The residents lived around the synagogue, the mikveh, and the schools, all imbued with a gentle spirit reminiscent of pre-war Europe. Kiryas Tosh became a spiritual refuge for hundreds of Jewish families seeking purity and truth.
A Hidden Tsadik in His Generation
The Tosher Rebbe never presented himself as extraordinary. He shunned honor, praise, and public attention. Yet anyone entering his room could feel an atmosphere unlike any other — a palpable peace, a deep silence.
Those who met him said that his gaze could calm an inner storm. He did not need to speak to bring comfort; his face radiated such kindness that it could heal.
Thousands came to him — Hasidim, secular Jews, the sick, and the grieving — some for a blessing, others simply to breathe a moment of truth in his presence. He embodied the essence of the hidden tzadik, the righteous man who sustains the world silently.
His Essential Message
"A Jew must love even one who is not yet ready to be loved. For it is in that look of love that he will find his soul again."
His teachings rested on three pillars:
- Ahavat Yisrael – Unconditional love for the Jewish people, without distinction.
- Bitul – Self-nullification before the will of Hashem.
- Simcha – The pure and simple joy of divine service.
He taught that holiness is not found in visible miracles, but in silent constancy — in remaining kind, faithful, and joyful even through trials.
Legacy and Works
His teachings were collected and published by his followers in numerous volumes, which became classics of contemporary Hasidism. But more than his writings, it was his gentleness, his humility, and his luminous presence that continue to inspire those who knew him.
He left this world on August 12, 2015 (27 Av 5775). His funeral gathered thousands of people from all walks of life, in an overwhelming silence — the same silence that had accompanied him throughout his life.

צדיק של ענווה, אהבה ודממה קדושה
האדמו״ר מטאש, רבי משולם פייש לוי זי״ע, נולד בשנת 1921 בעיירה נירטאש שבהונגריה, למשפחה ספוגה במסורת חסידית וביראת שמים.
הוא חווה את זוועות מלחמת העולם השנייה ואיבד חלק גדול ממשפחתו בשואה. אך מתוך החושך הזה בקעה אור גדול – אורו של אדם שאמונתו, רחמיו ושלוותו הפכו את הכאב לאהבת ישראל.
הוא נמנה על אותן נשמות נדירות שאינן מדברות כדי לשכנע, אלא ששתיקתן מלמדת.
מהונגריה לבניית חיים חדשים
לאחר המלחמה, קיבל על עצמו את הנהגת שושלת טאש החסידית, שהוקמה על ידי זקנו רבי אלימלך מטאש. מול סכנת השלטון הקומוניסטי, עזב את הונגריה בשנת 1951 והשתקע במונטריאול שבקנדה.
שם בנה מחדש, באמונה ובענווה, קהילה של חום, פשטות ונאמנות לה׳.
בשנת 1963 ייסד את קרית טאש בעיר בויסבריאן שבקרבת מונטריאול – עיירה חסידית שקטה, הרחק מהמולת העולם. התושבים חיו סביב הבית הכנסת, המקוה והתלמוד תורה, באווירה שהזכירה את אירופה שלפני המלחמה. קרית טאש הפכה למקלט רוחני למאות משפחות שביקשו טהרה ואמת.
צדיק נסתר בדורו
האדמו״ר מטאש מעולם לא ראה עצמו כאדם מיוחד. הוא התרחק מכבוד, מנאומים ומפרסום. אך כל מי שנכנס לחדרו הרגיש אווירה אחרת – שלווה עמוקה, דממה מוחשית.
אומרים שמבטו יכול היה להרגיע סערה פנימית. הוא לא נזקק למילים כדי לנחם; פניו הקרינו טוב לב שדי היה בו כדי לרפא.
אלפים הגיעו אליו – חסידים, חילונים, חולים, ואבלים – מהם שביקשו ברכה, ומהם שבאו רק לנשום רגע של אמת לידו. הוא גילם את דמות הצדיק הנסתר, המחזיק את העולם בשקט.
תורתו ותמצית דבריו
״יהודי צריך לאהוב גם את מי שעדיין איננו מוכן להיות נאהב – כי באותו מבט של אהבה הוא ישוב וימצא את נשמתו״.
תורתו נשענה על שלושה יסודות:
- אהבת ישראל – אהבה ללא תנאי לכל יהודי באשר הוא.
- ביטול – הענווה וההתמסרות לרצון ה׳.
- שמחה – השמחה הפשוטה בעבודת ה׳.
הוא לימד כי הקדושה איננה נמדדת בניסים גלויים, אלא בעמידה שקטה ובנאמנות מתמדת – באדם שנשאר טוב, נאמן ושמח גם בעת הניסיון.
מורשתו וספריו
דבריו ודרשותיו נאספו על ידי תלמידיו ונדפסו בספרים רבים, שהפכו ליסודות בתורת החסידות בת זמננו. אך יותר מכל – דמותו, עדינותו ונוכחותו המאירה ממשיכות להאיר בלבבות רבים.
האדמו״ר הסתלק ביום כ״ז באב תשע״ה (12 באוגוסט 2015). הלווייתו ריכזה אלפי אנשים מכל רחבי העולם, בדממה מרגשת – אותה דממה שליוותה את חייו.

ספרי תורתו נדפסו בכמה סדרות עיקריות, ובהן דרשות, אגרות ופירושים על התורה:

Un maître de douceur, de silence et d’amour véritable
Le Tosher Rebbe, Rabbi Meshulam Feish Lowy zatsal, naquit en 1921 à Nyírtass, en Hongrie, dans une famille imprégnée de tradition hassidique et de yirat shamayim (crainte respectueuse du Ciel).
Marqué par les tourments de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, il vit disparaître une grande partie de sa famille dans la Shoah.
Mais de cette obscurité jaillit une lumière : celle d’un homme dont la foi, la compassion et la sérénité transformèrent la douleur en amour du prochain.
Il faisait partie de ces âmes rares qui ne parlent pas pour convaincre, mais dont le silence enseigne.
De la Hongrie à la reconstruction de la vie
Après la guerre, il reprit la direction de la dynastie hassidique de Tosh, fondée par son ancêtre Rabbi Elimelech de Tosh.
Face à la menace du régime communiste, il quitta la Hongrie en 1951 pour s’installer à Montréal, au Canada.
Là, il reconstruisit lentement, patiemment, une communauté fondée sur la chaleur, la simplicité et la fidélité à Hachem.
En 1963, il fonda Kiryas Tosh, à Boisbriand, près de Montréal : une petite cité dédiée à la vie hassidique, isolée du tumulte du monde.
Les habitants y vivaient autour de la synagogue, du mikvé, des écoles et des maisons imprégnées d’une douceur qui rappelait l’Europe d’avant-guerre.
Kiryas Tosh devint un refuge spirituel pour des centaines de familles juives venues chercher un havre de pureté et de vérité.
Un tsadik caché dans la génération
Le Tosher Rebbe ne se présentait jamais comme un homme extraordinaire.
Il fuyait les honneurs, les discours, la mise en avant.
Pourtant, quiconque entrait dans sa pièce sentait que quelque chose d’autre régnait là : une paix, un silence épais, presque tangible.
Son regard, disent ceux qui l’ont rencontré, avait le pouvoir d’apaiser une tempête intérieure.
Il n’avait pas besoin de parler pour réconforter ; son visage rayonnait d’une bonté qui suffisait à guérir.
Des milliers de personnes — hassidim, laïcs, malades, endeuillés — venaient le voir.
Certains pour recevoir une bénédiction, d’autres simplement pour respirer près de lui un instant de vérité.
Il incarnait l’idée même du tsadik nistar, le juste caché, qui soutient le monde sans bruit.
Son message essentiel
Un Juif doit aimer même celui qui n’est pas encore prêt à être aimé.
Car c’est dans ce regard d’amour qu’il retrouvera son âme.
Son enseignement reposait sur trois piliers :
- Ahavat Israël – l’amour inconditionnel du peuple juif, sans distinction.
- Bitoul – l’effacement de soi devant la volonté d’Hachem.
- Sim’ha – la joie simple et pure du service divin.
Il disait que la sainteté ne se trouve pas dans les miracles visibles, mais dans la constance silencieuse : celle de celui qui reste bon, fidèle et joyeux, même dans les épreuves.
Héritage et œuvres
Son enseignement fut recueilli et transmis par ses proches dans de nombreux volumes, devenus des classiques du hassidisme contemporain.
Mais plus encore que ses livres, c’est son attitude, sa douceur et sa présence lumineuse qui continuent d’inspirer ceux qui l’ont connu.
Il quitta ce monde le 12 août 2015 (27 Av 5775).
Ses funérailles rassemblèrent des milliers de personnes, venues de partout, dans un silence impressionnant — le même silence qui avait toujours accompagné sa vie.
